Solar panels and batteries
Panels on the roof and, in some homes, a battery. They make electricity for your home and can lower your electricity bill.
Solar and batteryFor residents
Pro-Fit carries out improvement works to homes on behalf of landlords. If your home is on one of those programmes, this part of the website is for you. It explains what we do, when we do it, and what we need from you.
You can contact us directly. You do not have to go through your landlord first. Our number is 01935 315315 and we are happy to answer questions about the work, however small.
✓ Nothing on these pages is for sale. Nobody will try to sell you anything.
Programmes are different in every area. Your home may be having one of these, or more than one. Your letter will say which. Each page below explains that work in plain terms.
Panels on the roof and, in some homes, a battery. They make electricity for your home and can lower your electricity bill.
Solar and batteryA new roof, or repairs to the one you have. This work needs scaffolding and it is noisy for part of the time.
Roofing worksNew windows, and sometimes new front or back doors. We work room by room and your home is secure each night.
Windows and doorsIf you are elderly or disabled, or you need help of any other kind, we can change how we work. Just ask.
Extra supportStage by stage
Every programme follows the same eight stages. Most of them happen without you having to do anything. Where we do need something from you, it is written under the stage.
You get a letter telling you that your home is part of a programme. It says what work is planned and roughly when. We will then contact you to arrange a survey.
What you need to do: nothing yet. If the letter has arrived at a bad time, or you have questions, ring us and say so.
A surveyor visits your home. They look at the roof, the loft, the meter and the fuse box, and they measure up. It usually takes under an hour. Nothing is fitted on this visit.
What you need to do: be at home, and let the surveyor reach the loft hatch and the fuse box. Tell us on this visit if you need extra support of any kind.
We plan the work for your home and send it to your landlord to approve. This part happens in an office, not at your home. It can take a few weeks.
What you need to do: nothing. You can ring us at any time to ask where your home has got to.
We agree a date with you and confirm it in writing. We will tell you how many days the work should take and what will happen on each day.
What you need to do: tell us if the date does not suit you. Hospital appointments, night shifts, childcare and carer visits all matter, so please say.
Our team arrives at the agreed time. They will show you an identity card before they come in. They will tell you what they are doing that day and when they expect to finish.
What you need to do: clear the areas we agreed at the survey, and keep pets in a safe room. If you cannot move something, tell us and we will help.
When the work is finished, someone who did not do the work checks it. They test what needs testing, take photographs for the record, and check the site is clean and safe.
What you need to do: nothing. If you noticed something during the work, this is a good moment to mention it.
We show you anything new in your home and how to use it. You get paperwork covering the work, and the details you need if something goes wrong later.
What you need to do: be at home if you can. If you cannot, we will arrange another time rather than leave paperwork on the mat.
The work is covered after we leave. If something is not right, ring us and we will come back. You do not need to prove anything first.
What you need to do: keep your paperwork somewhere safe, and ring 01935 315315 if you have a problem.
These are the questions residents ask us most. If yours is not here, please ring and ask.
For solar and battery work, yes, for part of one day. We turn the electricity off while the new wiring is connected. It is usually a few hours.
We tell you the day before, so you can charge phones, plan meals and set up anything you need. If you use medical equipment that needs power, tell us before the work starts and we will plan around it.
Roofing, window and door work does not normally need the power off.
Yes for the survey, and yes on any day we need to work inside your home. We will tell you clearly which days those are.
For work only on the outside, such as scaffolding or roof work, you do not have to stay in. If nobody will be home, please tell us in advance.
It depends on the work. Solar and battery work is usually one or two days. A new roof is usually a few days. Windows and doors are usually one or two days for a whole home.
Scaffolding is put up before and taken down after, so the whole job feels longer than the days we are working.
You will be given the days for your home in writing before we start.
Roof work always needs scaffolding. Solar work usually does. Windows and doors usually do not.
Scaffolding normally goes up a day or two before the work and comes down within a few days after. Bad weather can hold this up.
Please do not let children play on it and do not use it to reach anything. If you are worried about security while it is up, ring us and we will talk it through.
Tell us about your pets before we start, including nervous ones.
On working days, please keep pets in one room away from the work, or with a neighbour or friend if that is easier. Doors are open a lot while we carry materials in and out, and cats in particular can get out.
Our teams will not open a door to a room if you tell us a pet is behind it.
Tell us and we will change how we work. That can mean shorter days, quieter hours, a female operative, extra warning before we arrive, help moving furniture, or a familiar person present.
You do not have to explain why, and you do not have to prove anything. Our extra support page sets out what is available and how to ask.
Ring us on 01935 315315. Ask for the resident liaison team and say which programme or address you are calling about.
You can contact us directly. You do not have to go through your landlord.
Sometimes. Solar work needs someone inside to reach the loft and the fuse box. Window and door work is inside by its nature. Roof work is mostly outside, though we may need to check the loft.
We will always tell you in advance which days we need to be inside, and roughly for how long.
Every person who knocks will carry a Pro-Fit identity card. Please ask to see it. If you are not sure, ring us on 01935 315315 and we will confirm who is at your door.
We will tell you at the survey what needs moving and how far. Usually it is furniture near a window, or items stored in the loft.
We cover floors and furniture that stay in the room. Anything we do move, we put back.
If you cannot move things yourself, say so. We will either move them for you or bring extra help on the day.
Tell us. The sooner we know, the sooner we can put it right.
Ring 01935 315315 and say what is wrong. We will book a visit to look at it. You will not be charged, and you do not need to argue your case first.
If you would rather make a formal complaint, our extra support page explains how, and what happens after you do.
Extra support
Some homes need a different approach. That is normal and it is not a problem. Here is some of what we can do.
When a programme starts in your area, we add a resident pack for it here. The pack explains that programme, gives the dates and names the people working on it.
There are no downloads on this page at the moment. Resident packs are added as each programme starts, so please check back once you have had your letter.
If you need information now, ring 01935 315315 and we will post it to you or read it to you over the phone.
You can ring us directly about anything to do with the work at your home. You do not need a reference number to call.
Ask for the resident liaison team. Tell us your address and which work is planned, and we will find your job.
The name and direct number of the resident liaison officer for your programme will be shown here once that programme starts. They will also be printed in the letter you receive.
Until then, please use the number on the left and ask for resident liaison.
This page is for residents of homes receiving improvement works. Nothing on it is an offer of sale and nothing on it changes your tenancy or lease. If you are not sure whether your home is part of a programme, ring us and we will check.
